Abby Stapleton is an MD/PhD student in the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP). She earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Furman University, graduating summa cum laude in 2024. Abby joined the Gurtner Lab with a strong background in molecular biology, epigenetics, microbiome research, and clinically relevant translational science.

Her previous research has included investigating epigenetic regulation in retinal development and disease, examining the effects of diet and antibiotics on the gut microbiome, and studying mechanisms of fluconazole resistance in Candida glabrata. In the Gurtner Lab, Abby contributes to research focused on wound healing and regenerative medicine while continuing to develop her interests at the intersection of basic science, translational research, and clinical care. Her long-term goal is to pursue a career as a physician-scientist, integrating patient care with research that advances the understanding and treatment of human disease.
